Without trying to make a list of "the best" moisturizer for acne-prone skin, there are in fact a few that manage to hold the top positions when researched, and are successful to date for treating acne. Finding what is the best moisturizer for acne-prone skin is possible by keeping in mind what it needs to include in the contents and what it claims to produce. The following are some key ingredients and expectations that are necessary to look for in choosing what is the best moisturizer for acne-prone skin:

When cleansing your face with the moisturizing cleanser, gentle is the key. Your hands are the preferred "tool" for washing your face, as a towelette or wash cloth could be entirely too rough for your skin. If you are not gentle with your washing techniques, the chances of the acne worsening or resulting in scarring is practically eminent. An excellent moisturizing cleanser should effectively clean your skin when used in a gentle cleaning without rupturing the acne sores.

The moisturizer chosen should be specifically for the treatment of acne, identifiable by a few key ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, both of which are instrumental in assisting the treating and lessening of acne sores.

Choosing the best moisturizer for your acne-prone skin will be one that will not further irritate your acne by being cosmetic or heavy and pore filling. This moisturizer should be oil-free and with the best of ingredients, be anti-bacterial to help your acne-prone skin to resist any further break-outs.

When considering the moisturizers available on the market today, following these simple steps could save you a lot of time, money, and further aggravation of your acne condition as well. When in doubt, consult your doctor or dermatologist for further instructions or information concerning any topical creams, ointments, or moisturizers you are considering, before applying them. As with any other health related decisions, consulting your doctor or dermatologist is advised for any and all steps in your treatment and recovery as well. Your continued health and happiness are both vastly important, and remembering not to compromise either is a wise decision on your part.

Acne Treatment For Black Skin

The black men and women find acne treatment for black skin rather difficult. Acne is a skin problem which is common and consists of blackheads, whiteheads and also some big boil-like nodules or cysts.

Teenagers are by far the most affected by the disease which also affects women in their thirties. In puberty, acne occurs due to the changes in the hormone levels. With time and patience's, acne gets healed by itself in most of the cases.

Acne affects the hair follicles and also the oil secreting glands in the skin. It usually occurs on the face, chest, arms and back. They have different types of ‘spots’, like whiteheads, pustules, blackheads and nodules.

Acne affects people of all skin colors. The causes of acne are the same for people of different skin colors, but the impact of acne is altered according to the pigmentation of the skin. People from Africa, native Australians, African-Americans and other islands are darker than their Northern European friends due to the increased amount of the dark pigment melanin in the skin.

Melanin protects the skin from sunlight and also keeps the black skinned people appearing younger than the white skinned people. With age, dark people show irregularly pigmented skin, which appear as dark patches on their skin. If an area of their skin gets inflamed, it can be irregularly pigmented.

Acne in black skin

Though the treatment for acne is the same among black and white people, there are some exceptions. Some treatments may result in temporarily lightening dark skin. Very dark skin is not as well moisturized as white skin, so it is preferable to seek the advice of a dermatologist before using products that have a drying effect on the skin.

The part where the skin was inflamed due to acne among black people usually are in danger of excessive skin darkening. Severe inflammatory acne among black people may cause dark spots. However, a dermatologist may help in making the spots less apparent before they resolve. Chemical peeling of acne scars may result in temporary lightening or darkening of the dark skin in the acne affected areas.

There are no acne treatments formulated for the use of only dark-skinned people. Acne treatments are as harmless on black skin as they would be on dark skin.

Home Treatments

Fruits and vegetables are effective for the cure of acne. People with black skin can apply a paste of cucumber, lime, honey, oats, lemon, tea tree oil, tomatoes, orange, oats and turmeric. They can wash it off after 15-30 minutes for the eradication of excess oil and the killing of bacteria causing acne.

Exposed Acne Treatment - Does It Really Work?

EXPOSED acne treatment came in a clear #1 among topical acne treatment products currently available. The product is the only one that combines this synergistic combination of actives to treat all four known causes of acne:

1. Unclogs Pores & Renews Skin
2. Eliminates Acne Causing Bacteria
3. Regulates Oil & Sebum Production
4. Calms Redness & Inflammation

The result is smooth, healthy looking skin. We have read a great deal of testimonials from users of EXPOSED who have been very impressed by both the effectiveness and the gentle effect it has on the skin. Something to keep in mind as “harsh” products can actually make your acne worse after the initial effect wears off.

Judging from hundreds of testimonials EEXPOSED works really well and it comes with a solid 1 year guarantee as well. Overall EXPOSED makes a great choice for acne treatment and we highly recommend it.

Best Acne Treatment using Benzoyl Peroxide

With various forms of acne striking teens as well as adults, benzoyl peroxide is one of the most common treatments for acne. Many of the products on the market today contain benzoyl peroxide including popular lotions, soaps, gels and creams. Most of these acne treatments are sold over the counter under such manufacturer names as Neutrogena Acne, Benoxyl, Clear by Design, PanOxyl, Clean & Clear, Clearasil and Oxy.

Benzoyl peroxide works by killing the bacteria that frequently causes acne infection; known as P. acnes. While this bacteria is present in almost everyone, it begins to create a problem and leads to the presence of acne when the sebaceous glands become clogged with sebum. Redness, pain and swelling result from the infection. As the medication kills the bacteria, the excess sebum dries which may lead to some of the more frequent side effects noted for this acne treatment.

As a peeling agent, one of the most common side effects of benzoyl peroxide for acne treatment is the fact that it tends to irritate the skin. Depending on the user, this irritation can range from slight to more severe. Individuals who possess very sensitive skin are cautioned to use the medicine less often or user a weaker strength of the medication. In some cases in which the medication causes the skin to become overly reddened or even peel, it may be necessary to consult a physician. Benzoyl peroxide can also cause the following conditions:

• Blistering, crusting or swelling of the skin
• Severe burning or redness of the skin
• Skin rash
• Darkening or lightening of the skin
• Discoloration of hair as well as fabrics

Many manufacturers recommend continual use of benzoyl peroxide for optimal acne treatment results, leading to the question of whether there might be any long term effects related to the use of this product. Due to the fact that benzoyl peroxide generates free radicals, there has been concern expressed that long term use of this acne treatment could lead to the development of skin cancer later in life. At the current time, there are no studies to indicate this; however it remains a theoretical concern.

Women who are pregnant are cautioned to consult their physician prior to using any acne treatment that contains benzoyl peroxide due to the fact that the effects of benzoyl peroxide on a developing fetus remain unknown.

Benzoyl peroxide does tend to cause skin irritation, especially in sensitive skin, so individuals with such conditions as eczema or sunburned skin are also cautioned not to use it.

In a clinical study performed by the Department of Dermatology at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor; a combination gel acne treatment containing benzoyl peroxide was tested in more than 1250 patients with moderate to moderately severe acne vulgaris. The combination gel contained a 5% benzoyl peroxide solution. The most common side effect noted was dry skin with some isolated incidences of localized skin irritation.

Lamictal Acne Natural Remedies

The medical definition of Lamictal (Lamotrigine) is an eplieptic medication, also called and anticonvulsant. This medication has been known to cause acne problems among patients using this treatment. Outbreaks of Lamictal acne can at times be very painful. People who have never found themselves experiencing skin problems have suffered breakouts after taking the medicine.

Natural Remedies

There are many ways to treat Lamictal acne naturally. Ask your doctor about lowering your dose before you decide to stop taking the medication. Invest in gold soap, such as ct, since this has been known to reduce acne breakouts. Typically a bar will last approximately a month and costs around $24. If this is too pricey an option you can always use remedies that are generally found right in your home such as rubbing cut garlic cloves on your skin. Another option is to mix about one tablespoon of yeast with two tablespoons of lemon juice. This mixture acts as a cleansing mask for your face which can be peeled off once it is dry. Many people, even those in Hollywood, also use mashed avocados.

Herbal Remedies

Your diet has a lot to do with your skin and the foods that you eat can affect your complexion and irritation breakouts. Eating a healthier diet which consists of less caffeinated products and more fruits and vegetables can help improve the look of your skin and reduce the number of acne breakouts. Herbal remedies that you can use are listed, but not limited to, herbal mints, fenugreek, tumeric, garlic, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, radishes and sesame seeds. With luck you can usually find these ingredients in your very own kitchen.

Medicinal Treatments

If you are concerned about lamictal acne after taking the medication, speak with your doctor. He or she can usually prescribe a cream for your face to help neutralize breakouts and keep them from getting worse. You can always find acne treatment products advertised on tv and may find a good remedy, over the counter, in your local shopping center or pharmacy. Always speak with a doctor before using any type of medication and if you plan on using a topical cream, it is recommended that you test a small area of your face first so that you can make sure you won't have an allergic reaction.

Overview

While doctors are still unsure if Lamictal is necessarily the cause of all of these terrible breakouts of acne, it is found in the side affects of the medication. It is best that you do all that you can in your lifestyle to prevent acne breakouts and if you know that you are prone to acne, you should speak with your doctor before taking this medicine in order to make him or her aware of your concerns. Ask the right questions before you take anything. If you feel that your acne breakout is still a problem after following all of the steps you can, speak with your him or her about taking a similar medication with little to no side affects. Acne is a concern for many people on the medication so you are not alone. The best thing to do is express your concerns about lamictal acne to your physician in order for you to better understand your options.

Acne Laser Treatment & Surgery

Is Laser Surgery Recommended For Your Acne?

Acne laser surgery has gained in popularity, as many suffers are prepared to take drastic action to fight back against acne. Even though it can work wonders acne laser surgery should only be considered for use in extreme cases, when it is really necessary as a last resort. While it is often considered a beauty treatment, it is real, serious surgery and, as such, should not be used without careful consideration.

How does it work?

The procedure must only be administered by a trained doctor. A dermatologist may use acne laser surgery in the most severe acne cases to dig to the very core of a pimple and clear it completely. The laser device is designed so that it is weak enough not to cause any additional damage beyond the area being treated. Most experts consider this laser surgery very safe, but as with any surgery there is always at least a small opportunity for unexpected consequences.

Are there any problems with acne laser surgery?

Every responsible doctor will council that acne laser surgery is by no means a perfect and universal solution. There are several important factors that limit the surgery's usefulness.

1. The causes of acne
Laser surgery concentrates only on one aspect of the disease - its visible effects. While the surgery can surely get rid of acne's visible symptoms, it can not really heal. The laser surgery should be only a part of more complex acne treatment program that will consist of a change of diet, reducing stress levels and possibly even hormonal treatment. Otherwise the symptoms will sooner or later appear once again.

2. Doctors' only
Another possible problem is the surgeon's skill (or lack of it. Be sure you're going to get your acne laser surgery from a trained and experienced doctor. There have been reports of cosmetologists giving an acne light treatment without the proper training. Laser surgery is not the place to try and save money. You will get the best chance for success with an experienced dermatologists doing the work.

3. The Cost
Acne laser surgery is in a mid-point between cosmetics and health care. Some health insurance policies may cover it, some may not. Most insurance companies pay for acne laser surgery only in most extreme cases. Whatever you might think about the severity of your acne, it is wise to make sure that you insurance company agrees with you. Otherwise you may find laser surgery costing more than you planned.

4. Preparations
Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that you have to seriously prepare for the treatment. In some cases laser surgery is serious enough that you must spend a few days in a bed after the procedure. Can you afford to be away from work for those days… and will you employer agree to your absence?

Of course you should consider laser surgery if your acne is severe and has not responded to other treatment. Just don't rush in to it without careful thought and preparation.

How To Choose the Best Acne Treatment Products

With all the acne treatment products to choose from, it's difficult to know which are the best, and which are the poorest. If you walk into any supermarket or pharmacy, you're usually be surrounded by shelf after shelf of products, but fortunately however by the end of this guide you should know which acne treatment products you should be choosing.

To begin with, you should first identify just what acne condition it is that you possess. Is it regular acne, cystic acne, or perhaps even acne vulgaris? Is the acne just on your face, or is it on other regions of your body as well? These are all questions you must answer before we begin our search on choosing the right acne treatment product for your needs.

Now, whenever you see an acne product that you might be interested in purchasing, make sure to have a read on the label and check over the ingredients and contents of the product. Are the ingredients safe, or are they rather of a dangerous chemical nature which should only be used if recommended by a dermatologist or doctor? Check over the labels to ensure that the products you choose are of the right quality.

It may be that some ingredients of acne treatment products are quite natural as opposed to chemical, which is often a good thing! It's much nicer rubbing a smooth, silk like cream on your face if that cream derived from some great oasis or beach far away on some long forgotten shore, where many natural trees and plants grow with beautiful herbs and fragrant plants. Imagine if someone hand picked these plants and put their goodness into an ointment that you rubbed on your face, wouldn't that feel more soothing, more natural, and caring for your face than if you chose some foul chemical that will only irritate your skin?

Of course, commercial chemicals can have their use at times, and some acne treatment products have a mix of both natural and man-made chemical ingredients, but make sure that you only purchase the product that's right for your needs. Sometimes it can be tempting to just buy an acne treatment product that will immediately rid all of your acne within a month or so, but sometimes products like these can have adverse health consequences, so weigh up the benefits and the pitfalls of using such acne treatment products before going ahead with them.

At the end of the day, there's nothing better you can do than speaking or your doctor or dermatologist, or even nutritionist. They'll be able to advise you on these acne treatment products to use and they'll make sure that they only recommend products that are suitable for your needs.

Get Rid of Back Acne With 3 Simple Step Process

Acne is very common in human life and there is no specific area to get affected nor has it any specific time for infection. But it is observed that teen age boys and girls often suffers mostly for their acne; and these acne is mostly cause excessive secretion of oils from the sebaceous gland. Every one needs to pay proper attention in giving treatment to acne. Otherwise acne can result in some permanent scar and life time infections. The most important issue of concern of this stage is the lesser self confidence for the person. Therefore, you must not ignore acne but take proper medication.

If you start scratching your acne instead of treating it with medication, you may result in wider acne and getting the acne severe in nature. Acne is caused by many reasons;

Hormone reason: Hormonal changes associated with puberty in boys and girls, pregnancy, and the use of birth control pills

Genetic reason: Children of parents who were acne sufferers will frequently experience outbreaks as well

Stress reason: Stress which often leads to a loss of self esteem.

Gland activeness reason: Over active sebaceous glands

Skin build ups reason: Accumulated dead skin cells.

Bacteria reason: Bacteria

Habit reason: Irritated skin or scratching that causes inflammation.

Digestion reason: Anabolic steroids.

Side effect reason: Drugs such as, lithium, or androgens.

Contact reason: Exposure to chlorine compounds. Cosmetics may cause follicles to stick to each other producing an acne outbreak.

Here are the easy three simple steps to get rid of back acne:

1) Wash your body and particularly your back with Neutrogena Body Wash. Apply liberally to the areas with pimples. Wait a couple of minutes then rinse. Make sure you get rid of all the oil. Let the Neutrogena sink in and work it's magic. To make sure you are free of oil, you first need to wash your body with water as much as possible.

2) Scrubbing your back using an abrasive sponge, loofa or soft brush. Be sure to not scrub too hard because you will increase irritation. Moisturize with oil-free, medicated lotion. Clean & Clear Dual Action Moisturizer, available at your local drugstore, is a great moisturizer to use.

3) Apply an acne medication cream. These are the easy three steps in order to getting rid of back acne. Apart from them you also take a note of tips describe in below paragraph.

If you wear makeup and facial moisturizers, choose products that won't cause pore buildup and nonacnegenic (won't cause acne). Remove all makeup nightly. Don't try to pop the pimple by squeezing, pinching, or picking at it. This will just inflame the pore and spread the oils that caused the pimple. See a dermatologist. They specialize in skin care and can prescribe you medicines that help you improve it. Don't stress out! Stressing out only makes acne worse. Find ways to stay calm in your life. Adults in their 20s, 30s or even 40s could need to deal with adult acne. In some ways, the problems experienced with teenage acne become all the more upsetting for an adult.

Imagine that what it would be like to have a huge zit appear on your face on the day of a job interview. Imagine what it would be like to have a case of adult acne on the day you are supposed to participate in a wedding. Either of those scenarios could well ruin the dreams or hopes of a young adult who has had an unexpected acne flare-up.

If such occurrences were to take place too often, then the adult with the recurring acne might become depressed. Sometime too, a person with adult acne demonstrates a marked social anxiety. Both of those psychological problems highlight the emotional turmoil stirred up by adult acne.

In some ways, the female adult has an advantage over a male, if she has recurring run-ins with acne. A female feels much more comfortable about using make-up to cover-up an unsightly zit. In addition, some of the newer formulations put in oral contraceptives have the ability to depress sebum production.

Both male and female adults need to accept the financial burden of adult acne. Unlike a teen, an adult can not turn to a parent when faced with a doctor’s bill. An adult with acne must pay extra attention to the benefits offered by a possible employer. The adult should realize that good health care requires money and time.

If an adult wants to try an acne laser treatment for acne or perhaps some blue light therapy, then that adult must set aside time for that treatment/therapy. That could mean speaking with a boss about rescheduling one’s work time to allow for the desired treatment. An employee who has shown diligence in the performance of assigned tasks can expect a better response to any such request.

Adults should realize that conditions in the workplace could aggravate a case of adult acne. An awareness of that fact should help a young adult assert his or her right to request time for some type of acne product. An employer would not feel too comfortable about showing a guest around the office if one person in that office had a severe case of adult acne.

Adult acne does not always affect a person with a full-time job. Sometimes a graduate student develops an acne flare-up. Such a student should not hesitate to visit the campus health facility.

Green Tea Extract | Popular Acne Treatment

Being able to cure acne naturally with items such as green tea extract has become hugely popular over the last several years. Natural acne remedies are generally much less expensive then traditional over the counter acne remedies and are likely to produce the same skin clearing results without creating any further irritation to your skin.

Green tea has been used as an acne remedy for many years. Its ability to rid the body of irritants is very effective in clearing the skin of blemishes. If you decide to use green tea to clear up acne do not add any sweeteners to your tea as in will negate all of the positive effects that the tea can provide your skin with.

If drinking tea is not your thing then you can select for a great variety of acne fighting products containing green tea tree extract. The most popular form of acne remedy containing green tea extract is skin cream. This type of acne fighting product is gaining popularity fast among consumers as it is very easy on all skin types.

A very popular method of combating acne with green tea extract is to pair it with green tea. This is very effective, as you will not only be ridding your skin of blemishes you will also be combating the irritants from inside your body that contribute to acne forming in the first place.

Another reason products containing green tea extract are so popular is that they are very assessable. You can find them everywhere from your local grocery store, health food store and even online.

Fighting acne using natural products will always be a pleasant alternative to consumers that do not want to risk the potentially bad side effects associated with most traditional acne medications. Green tea extract should be at the top of the list of natural acne remedies for years to come.

Acne Product | TAZORAC® Cream and Gel 0.1%

What is TAZORAC® Cream and Gel 0.1% all about

TAZORAC® is a retinoid, a type of prescription drug you spread on your skin. I've had breakouts and lots of blackheads since having my two daughters. Have been on this for almost 2 weeks and my skin has never looked better. I have very sensitive skin but I think the reason for no side effects is that I have only been putting a small blob of 0.1% gel on at night and washing it off after only one minute. then follow with cetaphil. i plan to gradually increase the time I leave it on, but just this small amount has really cleared my skin. my blackheads are fading and my skin just feels a lot smoother. thank goodness. not fun having wrinkles AND acne at 37.

User #2
I've been using tazorac for about 3 and a half weeks now. The derm put me on .1% and bactrim. After about the 2nd week of using them, the bactrim started to give me a rash (because i was allergic to this). So, now I'm only using the tazorac at night and a face wash in both in the morning and night. I don't really see any improvement at all. I'm still breaking out around my mouth and a little on the cheeks. I'm very dissappointed right now but i know that it take time. So, I'll hang in there and hopefully it will start to improve. But when does it start to get better?

Aloe Vera Extract | A Useful Tool In Fighting Acne

With acne being such a prominent problem with so many people, Aloe Vera extract is a gentle alternative to traditional over the counter and prescription acne medication. Not only does Aloe Vera extract contain anti-inflammatory agents in addition to immune boosting properties it also can aid in reducing the appearance of scars related to blemish breakouts.

A person that is suffering from acne breakouts should use a facial and body soap that contains Aloe Vera extract at least two times per day. This will help to keep your skin oil free without over drying it. Be sure to rinse off the Aloe Vera soap with cool to lukewarm water.

Using acne cream containing Aloe Vera extract in combination with Aloe Vera soap will be a great help to clearing up your acne. While it will not erase the signs of any acne related scars it will go a long way in reducing redness and flaky skin and it will reduce the appearance of inflamed skin and scars.

Aloe Vera is very mild and highly unlikely to produce any unwanted side effects. Over 80% of young adults are affected by this chronic condition. If you want to have clear, radiant & beautiful skin, you must do everything to prevent blackheads from forming in the first place.

What is blackheads?
Blackheads develops when excess oil is clogging the pores that are close to surface of the skin. If the pore is open and the oil is exposed to air and reacts with Oxygen, what you get is a dark colored blackhead. This clog occurs because the excess oil is unable to flow to the skin's surface due to blockage by dead skin cells.

What causes blackheads?
The following conditions usually lead to blackheads:

Excess of oil on the pores - Hormones are the leading cause of increased oil production.

Excess of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, which blocks the openings of the pores.

Use of skin care and beauty care products on the face that contain too much oil.

As you can see from the above, the main causes of blackheads are oily skin and blocked pores. To prevent blackheads, keep the skin as clean and oi-free as possible. Here are some guidelines on how to prevent blackheads:

If you want to prevent blackheads, stop using oil-based skin care products and make-ups. These oil-based products will clog your pores, increasing the chance of developing blackheads. You should opt for gentle, natural based, oil-free and non-comedogenic (doesn't clog pores) products instead. Dermalise is a good natural skin care products that you can try.

Apply a mask 2 times a week to absorb the excess oil and to tighten the pores.

Cleanse your face in the morning and evening with a gentle, oil-free cleanser to remove excess oil from the face. Blackheads are not caused by dirt, so do not use harsh, abrasive cleanser and do not scrape and scrub the skin harshly as it may damage the sensitive skin and the pores.

Steaming - If you want a good method of deep cleaning the pores, you should try steaming. The steam helps to open up the pores and allow you to remove dead skin cells, oils, blackheads. You can do this 2 times a week. Here's how you do it.
Boil a pot of water. You can also add herbs such as rosemary, peppermint, lemon, or chamomile. Allow to water to cool down a bit to avoid burning your skin. Drape a towel over your head to prevent the steam from escaping and put your face directly above the steam. Do this for 10-15 minutes and then rinse your face with lukewarm water.

Exfoliate to get rid of dead skin cells - Excess of dead skin cells can clog the pores, leading to blackheads and acne problems. Exfoliation helps to clear away the dead skin cells and excess oil. It can be done my mechanical (using liquid scrubs or cloths) or chemical means (using salicylic or glyolic acid). Salicylic Acid is actually the most recommended exfoliation agent, since it also helps to unclog pores whose openings have already been obstructed by oil and dead cells. In this manner, your skin will be pimple-free for a longer period of time. Over-the-counter Salicylic Acid solution should be available in every pharmacy or drugstore. You can safely and easily use these at home to take care of acne flare-ups.

Get enough sleep and rest - Stress is unhealthy and can trigger excess oil production. Getting enough sleep and rest is the best way to control stress and give you energy. Furthermore, sleep helps to rejuvenate the body and nourish the skin cells, giving you healthier and more glowing skin.

Additionally, it is important to exercise regularly and eat a healthy, balanced diet, and drink plenty fluid, all of which improves blood circulation, fights inflammation, and nourishes the skin for a healthy, clear, and radiant skin.

The use of pore strips, metal blackhead extractors and vacuum blackhead removers - These are commercial products that can be effective to remove blackheads if used properly. If not used properly, it can irritate and injure the skin. It is best to avoid using these products.
While following the above steps can profoundly improve your skin condition and prevent blackheads, you still may not get the results you desired. If your skin condition is worse, you may need to use a proven and effective acne fighting system.

Can Diet Really Affect Acne?

A healthy diet is extremely beneficial for the entire body, including the skin. Although it has been ostudied that foods blamed for causing acne actually do not, such as chocolate or greasy foods, it is possible that a bad diet can aggravate acne. So keeping a healthy diet is going to be especially important for acne prone skin.

Studies have recently been performed in Australia where the results proved that diets which had higher protein content showed an improvement in acne. Such foods are milk, cheese, breads, chicken, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Diets that were high in processed foods increased the blood sugar and insulin levels causing more acne.

The best diet to maintain healthy, acne-free skin should contain the following:

Vitamin A which is the main substance of Retin A (a popular acne medication) is found naturally in carrots, spinach, apricots and cantaloupes. A diet of too much Vitamin A can cause joint pain and birth defects so it is important not to have too much Vitamin A in your diet.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) can alleviate the stress known to cause acne. Foods with high B2 include wheat germ, milk, eggs, fish and meat. A deficiency of this vitamin can cause skin inflammation and poor hair and nails.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin) improves circulation and naturally protects the skin from sun damage. This vitamin is found in peanuts, brown rice, eggs, chicken, tuna and brccoli. A deficiency of this vitamin can cause fatigue and depression.

Vitamin B6 is found in chicken, beef and bananas. It is important to have this vitamin in your diet because a deficiency can cause excess sebum production, causing more acne breakouts.

Vitamin C is beneficial in producing collagen in the skin thus producing an overall clearer complexion. This vitamin is found in fruits and vegetables.

Zinc is very important to acne skin. A deficiency of zinc in your diet can result in acne or eczema. Zinc also helps boost the immune system which improves the body's overall health including the skin. Zinc can be found in eggs, cheese, chicken, nuts and mushrooms.

It is also very important to drink a lot of water. Mineral water being the best.

Water helps reduce acne by flushing out the toxins. Water also helps to keep your organs working properly. Problems in the digestive system can cause acne breakouts. Also water keeps the skin hydrated - if the skin is dehydrated the skin's natural exfoliation process can slow down causing pores to block adding to more acne.

10 Natural Acne Home Remedies

Acne is a condition that affects a wide range of people, though it is more common in teenagers and young adults.

The cause of acne has also been recognized to a variety of reasons ranging from dietary, genetic to even environmental. Whatever the cause of acne the fact remains that when acne is not well managed or treated it becomes a problem. There are numerous acne treatment products available nowadays but a closer look at what we have available to us in our immediate surroundings will reveal unusual but effective acne cures.

This article brings to you 10 very effective acne home remedies:

1. Garlic

Here there are two methods which you can either use together or choose one. The first option is to crush two or more bulbs of garlic and apply it to the affected areas twice daily. The other option is to chew and swallow one or more bulbs of garlic daily. You just have to cope with the strong smell of garlic.

2. Egg White

Crack some eggs and remove the yolks, leaving only the egg whites. Beat these egg whites for some time and apply this to your face. Wait for fifteen minutes and wash off the egg whites from your face. The egg whites help to remove excess oil from your face, egg white also heals and rebuilds the skin.

3. Toothpaste

As far as I know no scientific findings have proven how toothpaste can actually cure, the spread of acne but it still remains one of the most widely used acne home remedies. It might be a result of trial and discovery that made the toothpaste serve not only to clean the teeth but also as an unusual acne home remedy. Apply it directly to your acne before sleeping. This is believed to help control the swelling overnight. Just make sure that it is not the gel but the paste.

4. Baking Soda

It is widely available in all homes. Apart from its primary function in baking it is also good as a facial scrub. The purpose of a facial scrub is to exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin that can eventually clog pores and lead to acne spots. Add water to a small amount of baking soda and make a paste out of this. Gently massage the paste into your skin for ten to fifteen seconds. Then rinse the baking soda off, and pat your face dry with a clean towel. Dont allow the baking soda to stay on your face longer than fifteen minutes.

5. Salt and Water

Prepare a salt solution by adding salt into warm water. Use the resulting solution to wash your face twice a day, morning and evening. This will remove the excess oil from your face.

6. Vinegar

Most people that use vinegar to treat acne use the apple cider form of vinegar, you can also use plain old regular vinegar. Regardless of which type you use, vinegar can be very helpful when it comes to clearing up acne. It can kill off acne causing bacteria, balance your skin's pH, and absorb extra oil on your skin. Starting with clean, dry skin, apply diluted vinegar (eight parts water to one part vinegar) directly to your skin with a cotton ball, and leave it on. If you want, you can also use a stronger vinegar solution (say, 2 or 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar), and apply it directly to problem areas, rinsing it off after ten minutes.

7. Cucumber

Cucumber is capable of helping the digestive system function normally. Since the digestive system is closely related with the health of the skin, it should help reduce acne breakouts.

8. Lime Lemon or Orange

Take your pick from any of these members of the citrus family. Lime and lemon are very rich in citric acid which is a very good exfoliator. You can also apply fresh lemon juice mixed with rose water in your face, leave it there for 15 minutes. A continuous application of this for 15 days will give you amazing results. Ground orange peel added with water to make a paste and applied to the acne can also make your face free of acne again. Lime combined with rose water is also a recommended acne home remedy. Just apply it on your face and leave it for 15-20 minutes then rinse with warm water.

9. Oatmeal

Oatmeal can absorb unwanted oil and draw out impurities which reside deep in the skin. Cook some plain oatmeal like you would for consumption. Let it cool off, and rub it over your clean skin. Let it stay for a while, like you would a mask, and then rinse off. If you do this on a regular basis, you should notice results soon.

10. Aloe Vera

This helps prevent acne scars it also heals acne spots. As you may know Aloe Vera is used in a wide variety of home remedies.

Skin Basics

Introducing the epidermis. No matter how modest you are, your epidermis is always showing. It’s the top layer of your skin, the one you show to the world — and like your other organs, it has to work constantly to keep you alive. The very top layer is actually made up of dead cells, or corneocytes. This outer layer acts as your body’s natural suit of armor, protecting you from the sun, wind and rain. As your skin renews itself, the dead cells gradually slough off to make room for new ones, which are forming at the base of the epidermis. Once the new cells are ready, they begin to travel up through the epidermal layer, where they gradually replace the dead cells. If you followed the progress of one cell, the whole process would take about a month. But it’s happening constantly — in fact, in the time it took you to read this, you’ve probably lost about 40,000 cells. Luckily, 95% of your epidermis is working to create new cells. The other 5% are composed of melanocytes, which produce melanin, the substance that gives your skin its color; and Langerhan cells, which work with the immune system to help you fight off disease.

The delicate dermis. Below the epidermis is the dermis, which serves as a foundation for the epidermis and makes up the principal mass of the skin. This layer produces collagen, elastin and reticulin, the substances that lend structure and support to your largest organ. The dermis also houses nerve endings, blood vessels, oil glands and sweat glands — the various engine parts that keep the skin in working order. Nerve endings allow you to feel the sun on your face and the sand between your toes; they also tell you when to put on more sunscreen or get out of the water because it’s too cold. Sweat glands help keep your skin cool; oil glands produce sebum, which keeps your skin soft, pliable and waterproof. And all the while, blood vessels are working to supply the skin with the nutrients it needs to keep replenishing itself, and carry waste products to the lungs for oxygenation and renewal.

Subcutaneous fat. Contrary to popular belief, not all fat is bad. The bottom, or subcutaneous, layer of your skin is composed primarily of fat cells. The thickness of subcutaneous tissue is determined by a number of factors, including gender, age, heredity, hormones and eating habits — while it’s not healthy to have too much fat, you need to have some. Why? This part of your skin acts as an insulator, keeping you warm and protecting underlying tissue from shocks and bumps. It’s also the place where your hair begins — each hair follicle all over your body has its roots in the subcutaneous layer. These sebaceous follicles continue up through the dermis, allowing each hair to deliver sebum to the surface of your skin, so it stays pliable and protected.

The old saying “beauty is skin deep” carries a certain amount of truth. Our skin is the part of us we show to the world. Its appearance reflects our age, origin, health, and even state of mind. It has an unbelievable ability to repair itself — but it’s not invincible. One out of three people will experience some kind of skin problem during their lifetime; and nearly everyone gets a pimple or two at some point. For some, acne can be a serious problem, persisting well beyond the teenage years and eventually causing permanent physical and psychological damage. Do you or someone you care about suffer from acne? This website is intended to provide the information necessary to help acne sufferers get the upper hand.

Acne Cures That Do Not Cost A Cent !

Acne cures might not even be needed if you can stop pimples even before they start. Maintaining a healthy skin is important if you wish to avoid the curse of the zit, or any other skin problem, for that matter. Below is a list of simple practices that you can use - without having to shell out any money - to protect yourself from acne.

Acne cures for free

1. Eat right. When we say right, we mean healthy. A healthy diet has more fresh fruits and vegetables and less junk foods. Foods might not cause acne, but they sure do make it worse. Aside from avoiding acne, a healthy, balanced diet can also help you avoid other diseases that go with poor eating habits.

2. Exercise. It promotes better blood circulation, gives your pores more chance to take in oxygen and gives your skin a certain glow.

3. Relax. Take a few minutes everyday to relax. You can do yoga or you can just sit on your desk and do breathing exercises for a few minutes. No matter what others say, stress can contribute to the onset of pimples. If you haven't noticed, the more harassed you are, the more terrible you look. Just take a look at your pores when you're stressed out!

4. Water, water, water. Drink lots of water. It helps you have a normal bowel movement, giving you a better chance of flushing out unwanted elements in your body. Healthy inside, healthy outside, right? Besides, water has always been known to be an important element in keeping skin healthy.

5. Avoid excessive drinking and smoking. Smoking and too much alcohol cause dehydration and lack of water is usually manifested in the skin. After a night of drinking, you might have noticed that your skin looks dull and dry. Now you don't have to wonder why.

6. Keep your skin clean. Clean your face before going to bed. Never go to bed wearing make-up. The ideal practice is to wash the face at least twice a day. If you have oily skin, three times will be better, just don't use harsh soaps and facial wash products heavy in chemicals.

7. Use natural facial cleansers. We said it won't cost a cent, right? Find fruits like papaya, orange, lemon or avocado in your kitchen and make a facial mask or pack. If you don't have these, you can use oatmeal, egg white or vinegar mixed with warm water. If you have more vegetables than fruits in your kitchen, use cucumber, tomatoes or cabbage. More than likely, you'll find at least a couple of these things in your home.

8. Keep your hands off your face. It cannot be more costless than this! Just leave your pimples alone and don't even think about squeezing them. No matter how many times you wash your hands, they should remain off your face.

Acne cures need not be expensive or complicated. If you take care of your skin using these very basic ways, then you might not need to worry about pimples at all. Always remember, prevention is still the best treatment.

Top Acne Products - Top 3 Acne Products

PRODUCTS #1
ACNEZINE - NATURAL ACNE TREATMENT FOR NATURALLY CLEAR SKIN

If you have any kind of acne, even very severe acne, there is nothing you will find that works better to clear your complexion than revolutionary Acnezine Acne Solution! In recent times many over-the-counter products have been found that could tackle the problem of acne. But in some cases these are seen to be not very effective prompting people to take the help of homemade remedies. Cures discovered in your home's comfort are not only cheap but effective too.

Tips No 1
If you have a good diet, sleep properly and exercise regularly be assured that half your battle is won. Apart from this keeping your skin clean is absolutely essential and you could do this with the help of cotton dipped in alcohol. This is beneficial in killing the bacteria and also for cleansing the pores thoroughly. But make sure not to overuse alcohol or repeat this process often as this can lead to skin irritation or the skin can also start peeling.

Tips No 2
According to experts an overtly oily skin should be treated with an oatmeal mask to get good results. Oatmeal when mashed not only acts as a great scrub but also effectively soaks away the excess oil from your face. The usage of oatmeal paste must be followed by a cold water rinse that helps in contracting the pores.

Tips No 3
Other homemade acne treatments involve the usage of honey with apples where grated apple is mixed with honey and this paste needs to be made to dry on the face for a stretch of 15- 20 minutes after which warm water should be used to wash it off. This procedure can be followed twice or thrice a week depending upon the skin type of the person in question.

Tips No 4
Besides using fruits, experts are of the opinion, that herbs can also help you attain a pimple-free complexion. Herbs like burdock, sarsaparilla and yellow dock can act overnight on your pimples and bring them to a more manageable state. Tea tree oil is most preferred when it comes to handling a sudden outbreak. The antiseptic properties of tea tree oil cures the affected spots in very little time.

Tips No 5
Apart from having a great diet and applying magical concoctions it is important for you to have a daily intake of vitamins. Tests carried out by experts have proved that an intake of five thousand international units of vitamin A each day can actually decrease pimples. Vitamin B6 makes the skin more tenacious and consequently reduces the chances of a pimple outbreak. Zinc, in mild doses, if taken before an outbreak, can prevent acne from happening.

The next time you think you're getting an outbreak make sure to follow the simple homemade acne treatments mentioned above and see for yourself the changes that consequently take place.

How to Get Rid of Pimples Now? Immediately and Instant Result!

You’ve got a date in an hour’s time but the ugly pimple on your cheek is not going to help with a good first impression. The acne cream that you applied yesterday will take a couple of days to clear the skin…

This calls for an emergency treatment for acne! Here’s what you can do:

Prepare a small tub of clean warm water and another with cool water. Soak a face towel or sponge in each of them. Apply the warm moist towel on the affected area and compress it gently for a minute, this is follow by applying the cool moist towel over the area and alternating the two for about five times each.

The warm heat will help to open the pores while the cool water closes them. This process will help to dislodge much dirt and white heads from beneath the skin.

When done, wash the area with mild soap or facial wash, rinse it off last with warm water and blot it dry with another towel. You should then apply some toner or alcohol on the area. Any pimples or acne in that area should be cleared within the next few hours.

You will be amazed at how effective these simple procedures can help to remove pimples almost instantly. It’ll work even on those who have severe cases of acne.

Following are some do’s and don’ts during for this emergency pimple treatment:

Do not pick or pinch your pimple under any circumstances. This will cause it to inflame and grow into a big red spot. Further more, doing so may spread bacteria over other parts of your face especially if your skin has other open pores or wound. At worst, you will risk long term severe scarring too!

If it’s swelling and causing you some pain, apply an ice pack to the affected area for a while and repeat this every 30 minutes. Alternatively, you can also use a clean cloth to wrap around an ice cube. Smearing some toothpaste on the affected area can help soothe irritation and reduce redness. Alternatively, pressing a dampened teabag against the spot will also reduce inflammation.

It’s fine to use a skin colored medicated cream to conceal the spots but it’s very important to remove it as soon as you can. Never leave the cream on your face over-night!

Where possible, do not use any cosmetics which contain harsh chemicals. Wash and scrub your face a few times during the day with gentle facial soap. Avoid wearing make up until you have to go out.

Avoid using those over-the-counter acne products over long period of time as they dry your skin. Those that contain salicylic acid or benzyl peroxide works better. Applying some lemon juice to the spot and leaving it to dry will help too.

Remember that in an attempt to improve your acne problem immediately, there will be a temptation to use harsh skin preparations and scrubs on the skin. This will only worsen the condition.
The above tips will help you to get rid of pimples immediately and instantly, but for a long lasting clear skin, a gentle skin care regime is preferable. It’s important to be educated on how to achieve permanent acne control.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://acnehelpcentre.blogspot.com/2007/09/how-to-get-rid-of-pimples-now.html' title='How to Get Rid of Pimples Now? As with many other types of bacterial infections, doctors are finding that, over time, the bacteria that are associated with acne are becoming resistant to treatment with certain antibiotics, though it is not clear how significant a problem this resistance represents.

Scientists are also trying to better understand the mechanisms involved in acne so that they can develop new treatments that work on those mechanisms. For example, one group of NIAMS-supported researchers is studying the mechanisms that regulate sebum production in order to identify ways to effectively reduce its production without the side effects of current medicines. Another group is trying to understand how P. acnes activates the immune system in order to identify possible immunologic interventions. Other areas of research involve examining the effects of isotretinoin on an area of the brain that might lead to depression and developing a laser system to treat acne and acne-related scars without damaging the outer layers of the skin.

Researchers in Germany, funded by German institutions, have taken P. acnes and identified its genetic information (genome). This information may help researchers develop new treatments to target the bacteria.

How Should People With Acne Care for Their Skin?

Clean Skin Gently

If you have acne, you should gently wash your face with a mild cleanser, once in the morning and once in the evening, as well as after heavy exercise. Wash your face from under the jaw to the hairline and be sure to thoroughly rinse your skin.

Ask your doctor or another health professional for advice on the best type of cleanser to use.

Using strong soaps or rough scrub pads is not helpful and can actually make the problem worse. Astringents are not recommended unless the skin is very oily, and then they should be used only on oily spots.

It is also important to shampoo your hair regularly. If you have oily hair, you may want to wash it every day.

Avoid Frequent Handling of the Skin

Avoid rubbing and touching skin lesions. Squeezing, pinching or picking blemishes can lead to the development of scars or dark blotches.

Shave Carefully

Men who shave and who have acne should test both electric and safety razors to see which is more comfortable. When using a safety razor, make sure the blade is sharp and soften your beard thoroughly with soap and water before applying shaving cream. Shave gently and only when necessary to reduce the risk of nicking blemishes.

Avoid a Sunburn or Suntan

Many of the medicines used to treat acne can make you more prone to sunburn. A sunburn that reddens the skin or suntan that darkens the skin may make blemishes less visible and make the skin feel drier. However, these benefits are only temporary, and there are known risks of excessive sun exposure, such as more rapid skin aging and a risk of developing skin cancer.

Choose Cosmetics Carefully

While undergoing acne treatment, you may need to change some of the cosmetics you use. All cosmetics, such as foundation, blush, eye shadow, moisturizers, and hair-care products should be oil free. Choose products labeled noncomedogenic (meaning they don't promote the formation of closed pores). In some people, however, even these products may make acne worse.

For the first few weeks of treatment, applying foundation evenly may be difficult because the skin may be red or scaly, particularly with the use of topical tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide.

Other Treatments for Acne

Doctors may use other types of procedures in addition to drug therapy to treat patients with acne. For example, the doctor may remove the patient's comedones during office visits. Sometimes the doctor will inject corticosteroids directly into lesions to help reduce the size and pain of inflamed cysts and nodules.

Early treatment is the best way to prevent acne scars. Once scarring has occurred, the doctor may suggest a medical or surgical procedure to help reduce the scars. A superficial laser may be used to treat irregular scars. Dermabrasion (or microdermabrasion), which is a form of "sanding down" scars, is sometimes used. Another treatment option for deep scars caused by cystic acne is the transfer of fat from another part of the body to the scar. A doctor may also inject a synthetic filling material under the scar to improve its appearance.

Treatments for Hormonally Influenced Acne in Women

In some women, acne is caused by an excess of androgen (male) hormones. They include:

Antibiotics – help stop or slow the growth of bacteria and reduce inflammation

Vitamin A derivatives (retinoids) – unplug existing comedones (plural of comedo), allowing other topical medicines, such as antibiotics, to enter the follicles. Some may also help decrease the formation of comedones. These drugs contain an altered form of vitamin A. Some examples are tretinoin (Retin-A), adapalene (Differin), and tazarotene (Tazorac)

Others – may destroy P. acnes and reduce oil production or help stop or slow the growth of bacteria and reduce inflammation. Some examples are prescription strength Benzoyl peroxide, sodium sulfacetamide/sulfur-containing products, or Azelaic acid (Azelex).

Like OTC topical medicines, prescription topical medicines come as creams, lotions, solutions, gels, or pads. Your doctor will consider your skin type when prescribing a product. Creams and lotions provide moisture and tend to be good choices for people with sensitive skin. If you have very oily skin or live in a hot, humid climate, you may prefer an alcohol-based gel or solution, which tends to dry the skin. Your doctor will tell you how to apply the medicine and how often to use it.

For some people, prescription topical medicines cause minor side effects, including stinging, burning, redness, peeling, scaling, or discoloration of the skin. With some medicines, such as tretinoin, these side effects usually decrease or go away after the medicine is used for a period of time. If side effects are severe or don't go away, notify your doctor.

Brand names included in this booklet are provided as examples only, and their inclusion does not mean that these products are endorsed by the National Institutes of Health or any other Government agency. Also, if a particular brand name is not mentioned, this does not mean or imply that the product is unsatisfactory.

As with OTC medicines, the benefits of prescription topical medicines are not immediate. Your skin may seem worse before it gets better. It may take from 4 to 8 weeks to notice improvement.

Prescription Oral Medicines

For patients with moderate to severe acne, doctors often prescribe oral antibiotics. Oral antibiotics are thought to help control acne by curbing the growth of bacteria and reducing inflammation. Prescription oral and topical medicines may be combined. Common antibiotics used to treat acne are tetracycline (Achromycin V), minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin), and doxycycline (Adoxa, Doryx, and Monodox).

Other oral medicines less commonly used are clindamycin (Cleocin), erythromycin, or sulfonamides (Bactrim). Some people taking these antibiotics have side effects, such as an upset stomach, dizziness or lightheadedness, changes in skin color, and increased tendency to sunburn. Because tetracyclines may affect tooth and bone formation in fetuses and young children, these drugs are not given to pregnant women or children under age 14. There is some concern, although it has not been proven, that tetracycline and minocycline may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. Therefore, a backup or another form of birth control may be needed. Prolonged treatment with oral antibiotics may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

Acne Myth and Reality

Myth:

Reality:

You wash your face more often, then will help you clear up acne

Facial blemishes are not caused by dirt. Contrary to what you may have seen in commercials, pores do not get blocked from the top down. Rather, an entire pore collapses from deep within the skin, starting acne formation. Frequent washing does nothing to prevent this. Over-washing is actually irritating, and excess irritation can worsen acne. A washcloth can aggravate this situation further. Use bare hands to wash and only wash twice a day.

Stress causes acne

Stress is not a very important factor in acne despite what you may have heard. For patients with severe inflammatory acne that does not improve with OTC medicine, a doctor may prescribe isotretinoin.

Definition of Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin is an oral drug that is usually taken once or twice a day with food for 15 to 20 weeks. It markedly reduces the size of the oil glands so that much less oil is produced. As a result, the growth of bacteria is decreased.

Advantages of Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin is a very effective medicine that can help prevent scarring. After 15 to 20 weeks of treatment with isotretinoin, acne completely or almost completely goes away in most patients. In those patients where acne recurs after a course of isotretinoin, the doctor may institute another course of the same treatment or prescribe other medicines.

Disadvantages of Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin can cause birth defects in the developing fetus of a pregnant woman. It is important that women of childbearing age are not pregnant and do not get pregnant while taking this medicine. Women must use two separate effective forms of birth control at the same time for 1 month before treatment begins, during the entire course of treatment, and for 1 full month after stopping the drug. You should ask your doctor when it is safe to get pregnant after you have stopped taking isotretinoin.

Some people with acne become depressed by the changes in the appearance of their skin. Changes in mood may be intensified during treatment or soon after completing a course of medicines like isotretinoin. There have been a number of reported suicides and suicide attempts in people taking isotretinoin; however, the connection between isotretinoin and suicide or depression is not known. Nevertheless, if you or someone you know feels unusually sad or has other symptoms of depression, such as loss of appetite, loss of interest in once-loved activities, or trouble concentrating, it's important to consult your doctor.

Other possible side effects of isotretinoin include:

dry eyes, mouth, lips, nose, or skin (very common)

itching

nosebleeds

muscle aches

sensitivity to the sun

poor night vision

changes in the blood, such as an increase in fats in the blood (triglycerides and cholesterol)

change in liver function.

To be able to determine if isotretinoin should be stopped if side effects occur, your doctor may test your blood before you start treatment and periodically during treatment. Side effects usually go away after the medicine is stopped.

Treatment for Blackheads, Whiteheads, and Mild Inflammatory Acne

Doctors usually recommend an OTC or prescription topical medicine for people with mild signs of acne. Topical medicine is applied directly to the acne lesions or to the entire area of affected skin.

There are several OTC topical medicines used for mild acne. Each works a little differently. Following are the most common ones:

Benzoyl peroxide – destroys P. acnes, and may also reduce oil production

Resorcinol – can help break down blackheads and whiteheads

Salicylic acid – helps break down blackheads and whiteheads. Also helps cut down the shedding of cells lining the hair follicles

Sulfur – helps break down blackheads and whiteheads.

Topical OTC medicines are available in many forms, such as gels, lotions, creams, soaps, or pads. In some people, OTC acne medicines may cause side effects such as skin irritation, burning, or redness, which often get better or go away with continued use of the medicine. If you experience severe or prolonged side effects, you should report them to your doctor.

OTC topical medicines are somewhat effective in treating acne when used regularly; however, it may take up to 8 weeks before you see noticeable improvement.

Acne Treatment

Acne is often treated by dermatologists (doctors who specialize in skin problems). These doctors treat all kinds of acne, particularly severe cases. Doctors who are general or family practitioners, pediatricians, or internists may treat patients with milder cases of acne.

The goals of treatment are to heal existing lesions, stop new lesions from forming, prevent scarring, and minimize the psychological stress and embarrassment caused by this disease. Drug treatment is aimed at reducing several problems that play a part in causing acne:

abnormal clumping of cells in the follicles

increased oil production

bacteria

inflammation.

All medicines can have side effects. Some medicines and side effects are mentioned in this booklet. Some side effects may be more severe than others. You should review the package insert that comes with your medicine and ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have any questions about the possible side effects.

Depending on the extent of the problem, the doctor may recommend one of several over-the-counter (OTC) medicines and/or prescription medicines. Some of these medicines may be topical (applied to the skin), and others may be oral (taken by mouth). The doctor may suggest using more than one topical medicine or combining oral and topical medicines.

Understanding Cystic and Nodulocystic Acne

Cystic acne, or nodulocystic acne, is the most severe form of acne vulgaris. Deep, inflamed breakouts develop on the face and/or other areas of the body. The blemishes themselves can become large; some may measure up to several centimeters across.

Although many people use the term "cystic" to describe any type of severely inflamed acne, only those who develop cysts truly have cystic acne. Cysts are the most serious kind of acne blemish. They feel like soft, fluid-filled lumps under the skin's surface. Cysts can be painful.

Nodulocystic acne sufferers develop nodules as well as cysts. Nodules are hard, painful lumps under the skin's surface. Much larger than papules, nodules form deep within the skin and take a long time to heal. Some skin care experts believe acne cysts are not really cysts at all, but rather severely inflamed nodular breakouts.

For those who have nodules, but do not have cystic lesions, the term nodular acne is more accurate. No matter what label you use, a dermatologist must treat acne of this severity.

Who Gets Cystic Acne?

Cystic acne can affect anyone, but it is more common in teenage boys and young men. Acne seems to run in families. If your parents had cystic acne, you are more likely to experience severe acne yourself.

Causes of Cystic Acne

Cystic acne is caused by the same factors as other forms of acne, which are:

overactive oil glands

excess dead skin cells within the hair follicle (pore), and

a large number of acne-causing bacteria, Propionibacteria acnes

Inflamed acne blemishes develop when the follicle wall ruptures, leaking infected material into the dermis. If this break occurs near the skin's surface, the blemish is usually minor and heals quickly. Deeper breaks in the follicle wall cause more serious lesions. Nodules develop when the contaminated material infects adjoining follicles.

Like nodules, cysts begin as a deep break in the pore wall. A membrane then forms around the infection within the dermis. Some people are more prone to developing these types of serious breakouts than others.

Cystic acne is not caused by a lack of cleansing, drinking soda, or eating sweets. The sufferer has done nothing to cause his skin problems.

Effects of Cystic Acne

Nodulocystic breakouts damage and destroy healthy skin tissue. Because of this, the likelihood of developing scars is extremely high. Picking at the skin and trying to pop cysts or nodules should be avoided at all costs. Doing so can greatly damage the skin, lead to scarring, and worsen acne. Aggressively treating this form of acne can help limit the severity of scarring.

It's also common for those with severe acne to have feelings of embarrassment, shame, and anger regarding their skin. Some sufferers avoid mirrors, or shy away from social situations. Acne can hurt the self-esteem, and may lead to depression. If you feel acne is greatly affecting the quality of your life, please talk to your doctor. Luckily, with treatment, most people find their self-confidence improves.

Treatment

A doctor must treat cystic and nodulocystic acne. Powerful systemic medications are usually required. Acne of this severity can be hard to control. Don't be discouraged if the first treatment attempt fails. It may take several tries to find the treatment or combination of treatments that work for you. Some common treatments for nodulocystic acne include:

    Oral antibiotics

    Accutane (isotretinoin)

    Oral contraceptives - for women

Surgical excision and drainage - A doctor makes a small incision in the skin and extracts the infected material.

Intralesional corticosteroid injections - Medication is injected directly into the lesion to reduce inflammation and shrink the blemish.

Types of acne - Severe Acne Vulgaris

Severe acne vulgaris is characterized by nodules and cysts:

Nodules: As opposed to the lesions mentioned above, nodular acne consists of acne spots which are much larger, can be quite painful and can sometimes last for months. Nodules are large, hard bumps under the skin's surface. Scarring is common. Unresolved nodules can sometimes leave an impaction behind, which can flare again and again. Absolutely do not attempt to squeeze such a lesion. You may cause severe trauma to the skin and the lesion may last for months longer than it normally would. Dermatologists often have ways of lessening swelling and preventing scarring.

Cysts: An acne cyst can appear similar to a nodule, but is pus-filled, and has been described as having a diameter of 5mm or more across. They can be painful. Again, scarring is common with cystic acne. Squeezing an acne cyst may cause a deeper infection and more painful inflammation which will last much longer than if you had left it alone. These acne lesions include blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules and cysts. Mild to Moderate acne vulgaris consists of the following types of acne spots:

Whiteheads: Whiteheads result when a pore is completely blocked, trapping sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells, causing a white appearance on the surface. These types of acne lesions sometimes seem to be begging to be popped. Make sure you read about how to pop a pimple before you attempt this. Whiteheads are normally quicker in life cycle than blackheads. You can view a diagram of a whitehead on the what is acne page. The Regimen provides a step-by-step program on how to treat a whitehead.

Blackheads: Blackheads result when a pore is only partially blocked, allowing some of the trapped sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells to slowly drain to the surface. The black color is not caused by dirt. Rather, it is a reaction of the skin's own pigment, melanin, reacting with the oxygen in the air. A blackhead tends to be a stable structure, and can often take a long time to clear. You can view a diagram of a blackhead on the what is acne page. The Regimen provides a step-by-step program on how to treat blackheads.

Papules: Papules are inflamed, red, tender bumps with no head. Do not squeeze a papule. It will do no good, and may exacerbate scarring. The Regimen provides a step-by-step program on how to treat papules.

Pustules: A pustule is similar to a whitehead, but is inflamed, and appears as a red circle with a white or yellow center. Pustules are your garden variety zit. Before you pop or squeeze such a lesion, be sure to read about how to pop a pimple. The Regimen provides a step-by-step program on how to treat pustules.

Types of Acne

There are two type of acne which is inflammatory acne and the other one is non-inflammatory acne.

Inflammatory

Papule. The mildest form of inflammatory acne is the papule, which appears on the skin as a small, firm pink bump. These can be tender to the touch, and are often considered an intermediary step between non-inflammatory and clearly inflammatory lesions.

Pustule. Like papules, pustules are small round lesions; unlike papules, they are clearly inflamed and contain visible pus. They may appear red at the base, with a yellowish or whitish center. Pustules do not commonly contain a great deal of bacteria; the inflammation is generally caused by chemical irritation from sebum components such as fatty free acids.

Nodule or Cyst. Large and usually very painful, nodules are inflamed, pus-filled lesions lodged deep within the skin. Nodules develop when the contents of a comedo have spilled into the surrounding skin and the local immune system responds, producing pus. The most severe form of acne lesion, nodules may persist for weeks or months, their contents hardening into a deep cyst. Both nodules and cysts often leave deep scars.

Acne conglobata. This rare but serious form of inflammatory acne develops primarily on the back, buttocks and chest. In addition to the presence of pustules and nodules, there may be severe bacterial infection.

Non-inflammatory

Closed comedo, or whitehead. If the plugged follicle stays below the surface of the skin, the lesion is called a closed comedo, or whitehead. They usually appear on the skin as small, whitish bumps.

Open comedo, or blackhead. If the plug enlarges and pushes through the surface of the skin, it's called an open comedo, or blackhead. The plug's dark appearance is not due to dirt, but rather to a buildup of melanin, the skin's dark pigment.

Acne and Kids

Why Do So Many Kids Get Acne?

A lot of kids and teens get a type of acne called acne vulgaris. It usually appears on the face, neck, shoulders, upper back, and chest. Teens and kids get acne because of the hormone changes that come with puberty. As you grow up and your body begins to develop, these hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to make more sebum, and the glands can become overactive. When there is too much sebum, that oil clogs the pores and leads to acne.

No matter what you've heard, acne isn't caused by eating greasy foods like french fries or pizza, munching on chocolate, or drinking soda. It isn't necessarily caused by wearing makeup, either, especially if the makeup label says "oil-free," "noncomedogenic" (say: non-ka-mee-doh-jen-ick, which means it won't clog pores), or "nonacnegenic" (which means it doesn't cause acne).

If your parent had acne as a teen, it's likely that you will, too. Stress may make acne worse, because when you're stressed, your pores may make more sebum. Luckily, for most people, acne gets better by the time they are in their twenties.

Acne Developement

Doctors describe acne as a disease of the pilosebaceous units (PSUs). Found over most of the body, PSUs consist of a sebaceous gland connected to a canal called follicle, that contains a fine hair (see "Normal Pilosebaceous Unit" diagram). These units are most numerous on the face, upper back, and chest. The sebaceous glands make an oily substance called sebum that normally empties onto the skin surface through the opening of the follicle, commonly called a pore. Cells called keratinocytes line the follicle.

Normal Pilosebaceous Unit

The hair, sebum, and keratinocytes that fill the narrow follicle may produce a plug, which is an early sign of acne. The plug prevents sebum from reaching the surface of the skin through a pore. The mixture of oil and cells allows bacteria Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) that normally live on the skin to grow in the plugged follicles. These bacteria produce chemicals and enzymes and attract white blood cells that cause inflammation. (Inflammation is a characteristic reaction of tissues to disease or injury and is marked by four signs: swelling, redness, heat, and pain.) When the wall of the plugged follicle breaks down, it spills everything into the nearby skin – sebum, shed skin cells, and bacteria – leading to lesions or pimples.

People with acne frequently have a variety of lesions, some of which are shown in the diagrams below. The basic acne lesion, called the comedo (KOM-e-do), is simply an enlarged and plugged hair follicle. If the plugged follicle, or comedo, stays beneath the skin, it is called a closed comedo and produces a white bump called a whitehead. A comedo that reaches the surface of the skin and opens up is called an open comedo or blackhead because it looks black on the skin's surface. This black discoloration is due to changes in sebum as it is exposed to air. It is not due to dirt. Both whiteheads and blackheads may stay in the skin for a long time.

Types of Lesions

Other troublesome acne lesions can develop, including the following:

Papules – inflamed lesions that usually appear as small, pink bumps on the skin and can be tender to the touch

Pustules (pimples) – papules topped by white or yellow pus-filled lesions that may be red at the base

Nodules – large, painful, solid lesions that are lodged deep within the skin

Cysts – deep, painful, pus-filled lesions that can cause scarring.

What Causes Acne?

The exact cause of acne is unknown, but doctors believe it results from several related factors. One important factor is an increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones). These increase in both boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne.
Another factor is heredity or genetics. Researchers believe that the tendency to develop acne can be inherited from parents. For example, studies have shown that many school-age boys with acne have a family history of the disorder. Certain drugs, including androgens and lithium, are known to cause acne. Greasy cosmetics may alter the cells of the follicles and make them stick together, producing a plug.

Factors That Can Make Acne Worse:

Changing hormone levels in adolescent girls and adult women 2 to 7 days before their menstrual period starts

Oil from skin products (moisturizers or cosmetics) or grease encountered in the work environment (for example, a kitchen with fry vats)

Pressure from sports helmets or equipment, backpacks, tight collars, or tight sports uniforms

Environmental irritants, such as pollution and high humidity

Squeezing or picking at blemishes

Hard scrubbing of the skin

Stress.

Myths About the Causes of Acne:
There are many myths about what causes acne.

Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed, but there is little evidence that foods have much effect on the development and course of acne in most people.

Dirty skin causes acne; however, blackheads and other acne lesions are not caused by dirt.

Stress doesn't cause acne, but research suggests that for people who have acne, stress can make it worse.

Read more about Acne Myth here

Pilosebaceous Unit Definition

Definition: The pilosebaceous unit is a pilosebaceous unit disorder, or what is commonly called the hair follicle or pore. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it is the most common skin disorder in the United States. Acne vulgaris, as common acne is known, is classified as a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin.

Acne is characterized by the presence of pimples or "zits", blackheads, and whiteheads. It chiefly affects the face, neck, chest, back, and/or upper arms of sufferers. Rarely you will find acne in other areas of the body. Acne varies in development from very mild to extremely severe.

Acne most frequently effects teens and preteens. Three out of four teens will experience acne. Acne strikes both sexes equally, but teen boys tend to have longer lasting and more severe acne than do girls.

But acne is not limited to teens. Many men and women suffer from adult onset acne breakouts. Acne can also occur in babies, toddlers, and children.

Acne occurs when oil and dead skin cells become trapped within the hair follicle, creating a plug within the pore. This plug of dead cells and oil is called a comedo. Blackheads and whiteheads are examples of non-inflamed comedones.

As the breakout progresses and bacteria invade, the follicle wall may rupture within the dermis, creating inflammation and redness. Inflamed blemishes vary in severity depending on the damage to the follicle wall and the amount of infection present. Severe cases of acne may lead to deeper lesions and cysts.

Most people with acne have a number of non-inflamed lesions, or comedones. However, not every acne sufferer necessarily suffers from inflamed breakouts.
